Louisiana's Temporary Instruction Permit Rules

What you need to know

On September 4th 2018 the Louisiana Department of Motor Vehicles implemented a Temporary Instruction Permit requirement. The new law states that before an applicant can attend a driving school they must first obtain a license. This implementation was put in place to cut down on the amount of students taking driver's education courses that were ineligible for a Louisiana Drivers License. This has created some congestion at the DMV's , however like anything there is a learning curve. It appears that the DMV has it figured out as of late. Below is a simple guide to help you out.

TEMPORARY INSTRUCTION PERMIT INSTRUCTIONS

AS OF 9/4/18 ALL DRIVER'S EDUCATION STUDENTS MUST OBTAIN A TEMPORARY INSTRUCTIONAL PERMIT PRIOR TO ATTENDING CLASS. 

Below is instructions to obtain your TEMPORARY INSTRUCTIONAL PERMIT. 

STEP 1:

Go to the DMV. Below is a List Items to Bring to the Office of Motor Vehicles to obtain a Temporary Instructional Permit for Driver’s Education:

Minor Students (14 years to 17 years old) – items to bring every time a minor goes to the OMV

 Original or State Certified Birth Certificate (no photocopies) and another primary document or two secondary forms of identification.

 Social Security Card

 School Enrollment Form – student must be at least in the 8th grade

Original or Court Certified Custody Papers (if there are any)

Legal Custodial/Domiciliary Parent/Guardian with their Driver’s License or State ID Card

 Adult Students (18 years old and older)

Original or State Certified Birth Certificate (no photocopies) – see above for similar requirements

Social Security Card

Proof of residence (Two proof of residences if applying for a Real ID)

*Note: If an adult has a valid Louisiana State ID already issued and their Social Security Number is in OMV’s system, then only the ID and Proof of Residency is needed.

Cost of Temporary Instruction Permit is $32.25 with a possible service fee up to $6.00. Forms of payment are Cash, Credit/Debit Card, Money Order, and Check (check number must be over 1500 to be accepted).  Convenience fees apply for Credit/Debit Cards and Checks.

Step 2:

Enroll in the Driver's Education Class at NOLA Driving Institute. You can register by clicking this link NOLADrivingInstitute.com.

STEP 3:

Bring the following Items the first day of class:

Student documents required for class enrollment at your Driving School for driver’s education or pre-licensing classes: Minors: under age 18:

 Louisiana Temporary Instruction Permit

Original Birth Certificate

Legal Custodial/Domiciliary Parent/Guardian Driver’s License or ID card – Legal Parent or Guardian must complete the enrollment forms and sign documents at the school.

Original or Court Certified Custody Papers (if there are any)

Adults: 18 and Older:

 Louisiana Temporary Instruction Permit

STEP 4:

Complete In Class and Behind the Wheel Portions of Driver's Education. We will give you an envelope with the documentation necessary to obtain your Driver's License or Permit. 

Step 5:

Return to the DMV with 

Minors: under age 18:

 Louisiana Temporary Instruction Permit 

Original Birth Certificate 

Legal Custodial/Domiciliary Parent/Guardian Driver’s License or ID card – Legal Parent or Guardian must complete the enrollment forms and sign documents at the school. 

Original or Court Certified Custody Papers (if there are any)

Adults: 18 and Older:
